Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Haydn's death with his masterpiece The Creation. First heard in 1798, The Creation was Haydn's response to the great English oratorio tradition that he had encountered in London. Haydn poured a lifetime's experience into the work's composition and prayed each morning on bended knees for inspiration worthy of its monumental theme. Each part of the biblical story is brilliantly depicted in music, from the chilling emptiness of the void to billowing oceans and all forms of life. Even the worm, with sinuous trace, has his place in this magnificent work. For all its profundity, Haydn's sense of humour is never far from the surface and his love of life and the natural world can be heard in every aria and thrilling chorus.

For this performance we welcome soloists Pepe Becker from Wellington and Kenneth Cornish of Auckland. Joining them, direct from London, is James Harrison, last heard in Opera NZ's 2008 production of Hansel and Gretel and in Messiah with Auckland Choral in 2007.
