The sacred music of Haydn, Mozart and Hummel was the finest of its time, remarkable both for its exquisite vocal writing and brilliant orchestration. Haydn and Mozart were close friends and greatly admired one another's music. Hummel was Mozart's star pupil and later succeeded Haydn, on his recommendation, as Kapellmeister to Prince Esterházy. This fascinating programme features Haydn's turbulent sacred chorus Insanae et Vanae Curae (Insane and idle cares), completed in 1797 during the composition of The Creation.

Mozart's Coronation Mass (1779), the most beautiful and impressive of the masses he composed in Salzburg and Hummel's magnificent Missa Solemnis in C (1806), composed for the wedding of Princess Esterházy. The Missa Solemnis, one of the greatest successors to the late Haydn masses, remained completely unknown until Uwe Grodd made his acclaimed recording for Naxos. This is your chance to hear the first ever live performance of the work in New Zealand. Four top soloists join Auckland Choral for this feast of classical music.

There is a free pre-concert talk by Dr Allan Badley; 'Music fit for a Princess: Hummel's Missa Solemnis in C' at 6.30pm.
